# Highlights & notes

Papiers lets you keep what you read together with what you think about it.

Highlight a passage, add a thought to it, or open a note beside the document when you want more room to write.

## Highlights

Select a passage to highlight it.

Your highlights appear in the **Highlights** pane for the document and are searchable across your library.

Click a highlight to return to its place in the source.

## Annotations

Add an annotation when you want to attach a thought to a specific passage.

The annotation stays with the highlight, so when you return to the passage later, you can see what you wrote alongside it.

Annotations are searchable too.

## Notes

Open a note beside a document when you want more room to write.

Notes support Markdown, math, images, links, and references to other documents in your library. You can also link back to highlights from what you’re reading.

You can also create standalone notes that aren’t tied to a particular document.

## Find your thinking again

Search across your highlights, annotations, and notes when you want to return to an idea later.

Papiers can also draw on them when searching your library to answer a question.

## Highlight from Chrome

Highlights you make on saved web pages with the [Chrome extension](https://wiki.papiers.ai/docs/chrome-extension) sync back to Papiers.

Highlight in Chrome and the same passages are there when you open the article in the desktop app.
