# Notes

Notes use GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), with support for LaTeX and pasted images.

## Create a note

Click **Note** in the PDF toolbar to create a note for that document. A document can have multiple notes.

To create a standalone note, open **Notes** in the sidebar and choose **New note**.

Notes for the active document also appear in its **Info** pane.

## Write in Markdown

Use **Read** and **Edit** to switch between the rendered note and its Markdown source.

The first line becomes the note title.

Notes support tables, task lists, links, and other GFM formatting. Use LaTeX for math and paste images directly into the editor.

## Link to a highlight

Click the **link** button on a highlight to copy its reference, then paste it into a note.

In **Read** view, hover over the link to preview the highlighted passage, its surrounding context, and any annotation. Click it to open the source at that highlight.

## Use notes with AI

Notes are indexed with the rest of your library.

With **Search your library** on, Papiers can find and read them. Type `@` in Chat to add a particular note directly to the conversation.
